When applying to many of Canada’s immigration programs, you must prove your English ability. The CLB Canada test, or the ‘Canadian Language Benchmark’ is used as a national standard to assess the English language abilities of those immigrating to Canada.
The CLB system categorizes language proficiency from Level 1 to Level 12 and ensures that immigrants possess the communication skills needed to integrate effectively into Canadian society. It’s essential to understand how your English test scores translate into the Canadian Language Benchmark, for example, from IELTS to CLB.
But what does this mean if you have taken an IELTS test, which has a different scoring structure to CLB? As mentioned before, CLB scores range from Level 1 to Level 12, while IELTS scores range from 0 to 9.
Although slightly different, the two scoring systems are compatible with one another and can be aligned using an online “IELTS to CLB” converter. We’ve put together an IELTS to CLB calculator, where you can check the score equivalences.
Prove your English language skills with IELTS – the government-approved test that aligns with the CLB system.
IELTS is widely accepted and trusted by the Canadian Government as proof of English language proficiency. It was the first test to be recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Immigration Quebec for its immigration and citizenship programs and is considered one of the main CLB-approved English tests. IRCC currently accepts multiple English language tests for CLB purposes, including IELTS General, CELPIP-General, and PTE Core.
That is why many test takers in Canada choose IELTS from the British Council for their proof of language proficiency. Plus, it is entirely compatible with CLB as well. But remember that your IELTS score is valid only for two years.
Register with the British Council and join the many test takers who choose IELTS for immigration success! Check your immigration plan to make sure you are taking the correct version of the exam – Many require IELTS General Training, but some programs may require IELTS Academic.
