The IELTS Test Format Explained

IELTS on Computer vs. IELTS on Paper

Today, you can choose to take IELTS on a Computer or on Paper; both options are equally accepted, scored in the same way, and conducted under secure conditions.

Please note: in both formats, the IELTS Speaking test is always conducted live, either face-to-face or via video call, with a certified IELTS examiner. This ensures an accurate, fair, and human assessment of your English communication skills.

IELTS on Computer

The computer-delivered IELTS offers a modern and flexible testing environment. In this format, the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are completed on a computer at an authorised British Council test centre.

Furthermore, the exam interface is intuitive and includes features like a visible timer and word count for writing tasks.

The testing rooms are typically smaller, quieter, and designed to reduce distractions. Headphones are provided for the Listening section to enhance audio clarity.

One of the most significant benefits of the computer-based format is the speed at which results are available. Typically, candidates receive their scores within two to five days, which is especially valuable for those working within tight application deadlines.

Additionally, IELTS on computer is available multiple times per day, up to seven days a week, offering greater flexibility when scheduling your exam. If you’re comfortable using a keyboard, prefer digital tools, and want faster results, this version may align best with your needs.

IELTS on Paper

The paper-based IELTS follows the traditional exam format, in which candidates complete the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections by hand. As of May 1, 2025, all answers must be written using a black ballpoint pen provided by the test centre. The use of personal stationery, including pencils, is no longer permitted.

Furthermore, candidates are provided with printed question booklets and separate answer sheets for each section.

The environment is secure and closely monitored. After the Listening section, test takers are given an additional ten minutes to transfer their answers to the official sheet, a step that is not included in the computer-based version. Paper-based IELTS results are released within thirteen days.

This format is usually offered on weekends and may be more familiar for individuals who prefer reading physical text and writing by hand.

What stays the same across both formats

No matter which format you choose, you will take the same IELTS test, held to the same standards of fairness, accuracy, and international recognition. The content is consistent in every section, and every test taker is assessed using identical criteria. Your performance is evaluated by trained IELTS examiners who apply the same scoring framework in both versions.

The results you receive, whether from a paper-based or computer-delivered IELTS test, are equally valid and widely recognized across Canada by institutions, employers, and government authorities.

Additionally, the Speaking component maintains the same structure, duration, and scoring approach. It is always conducted in real time with a certified examiner.

You will be assessed through a live interaction that mirrors real-life communication and allows your spoken English to be evaluated as naturally and fairly as possible.

Take your IELTS test on paper or on a computer

Test takers now have the option of sitting their IELTS test on paper or on a computer with British Council. The IELTS test format is exactly the same on the computer as it is in a traditional paper exam. Both tests include the same content and are still completed with a test centre, but the Reading, Writing and Listening sections are just filled out differently. The Speaking section of the test will still be carried out face to face with an examiner.

What are the advantages of booking IELTS on computer?

IELTS on computer is available up to three times a day, seven days a week. So, there is much more choice when it comes to finding a test date that suits you.
Your test results also come back much quicker when you take your IELTS test on a computer, usually around 3-5 days. It typically takes around 13 days if you took your IELTS test on paper.
