Canada removes CRS points for job offers: language proficiency now carry more weight

 In News

Canada has officially removed the additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points that were previously awarded to Express Entry candidates with a valid job offer. The change, effective March 25, 2025, applies to all candidates currently in the Express Entry pool and marks a significant shift in how applications are ranked.

Until now, applicants could receive 50 or even 200 extra CRS points for arranged employment—often a key factor in receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

With this change in place, candidates will now need to strengthen other parts of their profile to stay competitive. That includes aiming for higher scores in areas like language proficiency, in order to help compensate for the points no longer available through job offers.

Language proficiency has always played a central role in the Express Entry system, and now, achieving a higher IELTS score is one of the most effective ways to improve your ranking. A strong result can significantly increase your CRS and improve your chances in future draws.

That’s why preparation matters—and the British Council is here to help you succeed. Our preparation resources are designed to strengthen the exact skills tested in the IELTS exam, so you can walk into test day with confidence and aim for the score you need.
